Army of the Dead (2021)

Zack Snyder’s new foray into the realm of the reanimated, Army of the Dead, is basically what might happen if Cormac McCarthy wrote Zombieland while inhaling the ashes of the Aliens script. It leans so hard into James Cameron’s sequel to Alien that a character even utters this line about the zombies: “You don’t see them fucking each other over.” Aptly enough, she speaks that line to a character filling Burke’s duplicitous role on this Vegas misadventure.

Army of the Dead isn’t bad for a Zack Snyder movie, and it’s not bad for a zombie movie, but it does waste some time on a couple of unnecessary side plots and stretches suspension of disbelief more than a few times. It also offers some intriguing possibilities about zombie biological mechanics that I won’t spoil here.

Worth your attention if you enjoy zombie mayhem, Dave Bautista food truck musings, and playing “spot the Aliens references”. Do not bother if you expect a plot that makes much sense.
