Word Archaeology: gyromancy

Gyromancy refers to a divination method in which an individual spins or paces around a circle with a perimeter marked by letters, until dizzy. The message was determined by the position where the person fell or stumbled across the circle’s edge after each attempt. It comes from the Medieval Latin word “gyromantia” – from Greek “gyros” (circle) and “manteia” (oracle).
