This word, from the French “decalcomanie”, is a technique for transferring engravings and prints. In modern times, it has been shortened to “decal”. The process was invented circa 1750 in England by an engraver named Simon Francois Ravenet. The technique became popular on pottery in the mid-1870s and was mechanized at the turn of the 20th Century.
