Jan. 9, 1923: First autogyro flight

On this day in 1923, Spanish engineer and pilot Juan de la Cierva made the first flight aboard his invention, the autogyro. He died 13 years later, at the age of 41, when the Amsterdam-bound commercial plane he was aboard exploded after crashing into a house south of the airport.
