Jan. 5, 2005: Discovery of Eris

On this day in 2005, a Palomar Observatory team led by Mike Brown discovered a dwarf planet – the second largest known dwarf planet – in our solar system. It was named a year later, once the discovery was verified. They called the celestial object Eris, after the Greek goddess of strife and discord.
