92nd Academy Award Nominees

This morning, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced nominees for the 92nd Academy Awards.

We’ve got 10 nominees for Best Picture, but only five nominees for Best Director – all of them men. Seems like if you’re going to nominate 10 Best Picture candidates, it’s only fair to recognize that many directors too.

In the comments, please feel free to share your own thoughts on the nominees – and the snubs.

The full list of nominees can be found here. Some major category nominees include:

Best Picture

Ford v. Ferrari: I haven’t seen it. Haven’t much wanted to, as I’m not the most automotive-focused dude on the planet. However, now that it’s nominated, I’m more compelled to check it out.

The Irishman: This sure was longer than it needed to be. Certainly, it is well-crafted, but the de-aging CGI proved really distracting for me. Nice to see all these actors in one film, though.

Jojo Rabbit: I haven’t seen it…yet. But I hear so many good things about it that I must remedy that ASAP.

Joker: I really loved this movie the first time I saw it, when it was called Taxi Driver. It shouldn’t have been a Joker origin story. Needed no connection to Batman or the DC Comics universe. It was perfectly fine as a story in the tradition of Falling Down, where a beaten-down loser goes batshit crazy. Everything related to the comics world felt like it had been unnecessarily squeezed into the narrative.

Little Women: Haven’t seen it, but would like to based on the great word of mouth about it.

Marriage Story: I’ve been through enough divorces in my life – including one of my own – that I really, really resist seeing this one. But I’ll watch it soon, just the same.

1917: I’m kind of a sucker for war movies, and I really want to see this one on the big screen, but I haven’t yet. Soon!

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood: I enjoyed the character study – of the people, the place, the time – and the alternate history twist within this latest Tarantino movie.

Parasite: Finally saw this and found it quite good – and extremely topical. Good choice to take it all, really.

My pick previously had been Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Now, though, I think Parasite takes the prize.
