Word Archaeology: blepharospasm

This word refers to the spasmodic closing of eyelids because of a muscle contraction, usually due to abormal function of the basal ganglion (the part of the human brain that controls muscles. First used circa 1842, it is derived from the Greek “blepharon” (eyelid) and the English word “spasm”.
