Word Archaeology: biocenosis

First used by German zoologist and ecology pioneer Karl Mobius in 1877, this word describes cohabitating communities of organisms – two or more different species living in the same geographical area at the same time. In paleontology, this refers to communities that previously lived together and now exist as an assemblage of fossils.
