Parasitic nematode worms, such as the common roundworm, that can infest the human intestine. The word, first used in the 14th century, derives from Late Latin “ascarid” and Greek “askarid”. Infestation can affect nutrition consumption, cognition, and may cause fatal intestinal obstructions. Evidence of ascarid worms has been found in mummified human remains from thousands of years ago.
