The zone of an ocean or lake below which sunlight fails to penetrate, usually somewhere in the vicinity of 300 feet. It’s the deepest point at which photosynthesis can occur. The word was first used in 1894, according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary. It’s derived from the Greek language.
